Michelle Singletary, whose Washington Post column, “The Color of Money,” also appears in the Boston Globe, had an interesting piece a few weeks ago about women and the “confidence gap.” She reports that “even though women have moved ahead financiall, a number of studies and polls indicate we still have more to achieve and sometimes we impede our progress by our own doubts.” She then offers some quick suggestions to start taking financial control. For those of you who missed Dr. Arnaa Alcon at our kickoff on April 23, a DVD of her talk on the importance of financial literacy and retirement planning for women has now been added to the Library’s collection, and may be checked out.
A Retirement Club member brought our attention to Suze Orman’s recent appearance on the Oprah Winfrey show, discussing her book Women & Money: Owning the Power to Control Your Destiny, which the library owns in both print and on CD (a copy of the DVD has also been ordered for the Library’s collection). You can also read an excerpt from the book on the Oprah show website, and if you like what you read, there’s more from Suze Orman on money matters in Oprah’s magazine, and on her own website.
Publisher’s Weekly said of Women & Money:
Orman guides readers through the very basics of finances. She explores why women have dysfunctional relationships with money and notes the ways they undervalue themselves or “treat themselves as a commodity whose price is set by others,” while also sharing the story of her own evolving relationship with her finances. Though her explanation of the “8 qualities of a wealthy woman” (harmony, balance, courage, etc.) is more inspirational than practical, she also presents a concrete five-month “save yourself plan” for financial repair, starting with setting aside checking and savings accounts, fixing one’s credit rating, saving for retirement, setting up a will and purchasing home insurance. This encouraging guide will not intimidate women who are foundering financially.
The club’s Resources page now has a section for general Money Management resources, including three mentioned by Dr. Arnaa Alcon in her kick-off speech:
Small Steps to Health and Wealth
From Rutgers University, resources designed to motivate consumers to implement behavior change strategies that simultaneously improve their health and personal finances.
